Management Advisors


Phil Smith (President and CTO) - a 30 year tech industry and startup veteran, acquired the mature software IP of an established security company, Cranite Systems Inc. by transfer of assets to TLC-Chamonix, LLC, which Phil founded. The product, WirelessWall, represents roughly $50M in development from venture capital investment. Phil is a network security expert and former senior product developer and principle forensic engineer with Cranite and has deep knowledge of the product and core technology. Phil as had a long and illustrious career with senior technical and managerial roles at HP, Cisco, NASA, Lawrence Livermore National Lab and many other positions. He is the innovator, architect and developer of several implementations of WirelessWall on mobile devices as well as the cryptographic libraries and identity management components. The business relationships with Cranite partners such as Cisco, Aruba and Nortel are intact, and Phil has acted as consultant after Cranite to retain the FIPS certifications and worked with key WirelessWall customers at Department of Energy, municipalities as well as technology partnerships.

Phil holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland. Graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, and numerous certifications in Information Sciences, Operating Systems Design and Network Security. Two year Guinness Book of World Records winner for worlds smallest video camera.

John Matthesen (Interim-CEO)  -  John is a serial entrepreneur, with over 25 years of global operations and sales experience in the US, Europe and Asia.   As part of the startup teams at Sybase and Commerce One, he held numerous positions, including CIO, VP of Asia Sales, and various roles in marketing and Engineering.  Since then, he served as COO at an internet advertising company, CEO at a software anti-piracy company, COO at a biotech software company, and is currently on the board of numerous companies, including Shanghai and Montevideo.  He is an active angel investor as well as a venture partner at a SF-based VC, and has been involved with biotech, shipping containers and several consumer product companies. Current projects include launching US divisions of technology companies from Mexico, Germany and Uruguay.

John holds a BA in biopsychology and linguistics from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  He also has certifications in Telecommunications Management from San Francisco State University and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.  He served as an adjunct professor of e-Commerce at Carnegie-Mellon university West Coast campus and is on the Advisory Board of Directors at Diablo Valley College.

Larry Karisny (CBDO) - is an expert in Smart Grid and public safety and founder/director of ProjectSafety, a non-profit organization. Larry brings 20 years experience in a variety of local wireline and wireless network topologies including power grid private networks and NOC operations. He is the Director of Project Safety.org. which focuses on end to end security platforms for both local public and private shared networks. As an independent consultant he supports security platforms for wireless broadband, smart grid, utility, transportation, public safety and critical infrastructure networks. He is a contributing writer for Government Technology Magazine and MuniWireless also participating in a variety of speaking engagements focusing on smart grid security.

Tim Chun (VP of Sales) -A proven global executive leader with over 15 years of sales, marketing, business development, and management expertise in telecommunications/IT.  As VP of Sales / Managing Director for Sage Instruments in the Asia Pacific region, Tim opened the first office in China with responsibilities of overall P/L, sales, marketing, customer service, and a repair center.  He established a distribution channel that grew revenues every year by 35% annually while delivering product value and consistent product positioning within the telecom space.  As such Sage's market presence in Asia and core brand of traditional land line areas has expanded to encompass wireless and VoIP services.  Previously, Tim was promoted to key positions in sales and marketing that were instrumental for a startup that had a successful IPO of $52 million.  He holds a BSEECS from U.C. Berkeley and a MBA from Santa Clara University.


Taher Elgamal, Ph.D
Dr. Elgamal is recognized in the industry as the inventor of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. Elgamal also wrote the SSL patent and promoted SSL as the Internet Security standard within standard committees and the industry.

Dr. Elgamal invented several industry and government standards in the data security and digital signatures areas, including the DSS government standard for digital signatures. Several thousand publications have been written in the space referred to as “the Elgamal Cryptography”. Elgamal developed basic work that was adopted in commercial products by nearly a dozen companies, several IEEE and ISO standards, as well the adapted DSS government standard for digital signatures. The work was also the basis for the Elliptic Curve encryption methods. Dr. Elgamal is on the boards of Securify, Facetime, hi/fn, Phoenix Technology and Tumbleweed. He has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Mr. Wood also leads the firm's Grid Industry Group (www.skgf.com/grid), where he focuses on helping innovators involved with ensuring power grid resiliency in an evolving smart grid infrastructure.

20 years of experience in Networking, Security and Mobile technologies. Founded couple of companies Efftronics Inc., (Which was sold in 1999) and e-Colt systems Inc., Worked at Various levels at Broadcom, Cisco, Marvell Semiconductor, Nortel, Cranite, Ubicom and Tandem Computers.  Strong People, product manager and architect of Network solutions.

John Vigouroux former CEO of Cranite Systems and CEO of M86 Security, (recently acquired by Trustwave) joined as an advisor.  John has been an extremely successful entrepreneur at raising capital, not only for the IP we are using when at Cranite, but he has raised over $60M in capital for his last 3 companies. John is helping with our strategy and investor pitch.
